POÉTICA DE LO ENTREABIERTO

Henri Matisse, “Porte-Fenêtre à Collioure” French Window at Collioure, 1914. In the collection of the Centre Pompidou Photo Philippe Migeat

Among the many paintings by Matisse, one stands as the very pinnacle of the uncanny. Three planes of blue, white and aquamarine frame a startling black background. The painting depicts what we might imagine to be a half-open window or door, empty and black, almost dissolved, drawing attention to a dark stain that turns the work into something close to an Expressionist painting, or an anomalous abstract composition. Matisse titled it French Window at Collioure, and, if I remember correctly, Louis Aragon once said that it was the most mysterious painting ever made. The menace of black as the "other side" makes that door seem almost alive. Hovering over that dark patch is the threat anticipated by Jean Pellerin when he wrote: "The door sniffs at me, hesitates." Never has the colour black seemed so alive, or so unsettling. There is only one way to annihilate that threat. Lewis Carroll's Alice knows it when she turns the door into a reflective, bottomless membrane.
What is it, then, about things left half-open? Why do we feel they are looking back at us? Where does their dark, ghostly power come from? To be honest, we never really know whether they are actually looking at us at all, or whether they simply remain half-closed, turning their backs on us as their very being withdraws. Even so, as Bachelard asks: "Towards whom do doors open? Do they open onto the world of men, or onto the world of solitude?" What is left half-open does more than allow us to imagine shadowy presences; it is the space through which dreams and winter warmth escape. It is the door left ajar for us when we have forgotten our keys. What is left half-open is therefore both an invitation and an unease awaiting resolution, whether by the slam of a door or by its wholehearted opening. It is a psychic territory that forces us to move beyond the familiar opposites of open and closed, of 0 and 1, of yes and no. The half-open (that magical synonym for the half-closed) belongs instead to the world of 0.3 or 0.7. A yes that never quite becomes one, or a no that is never final.
