MATERIA ERRANTE

Cada pedazo de arcilla, madera o piedra; cada mineral fundido para convertirse en acero o aluminio; cada montón de arena calentada hasta volverse esa pasta transparente llamada vidrio es materia arrancada de su medio para transformarse en algo que indefectiblemente invoca la marca de Caín. Toda materia arquitectónica arrastra la señal del exiliado, del desposeído. Y no solo la materia de la arquitectura: ocurre también con la mesa que usamos a diario, con la ropa que vestimos o con los alimentos que comemos. Existe un secuestro constante del mundo, de sus fragmentos. Toda materia es, por tanto, materia errante en busca de una nueva casa.
La arquitectura, cuando está lograda, le otorga un nuevo ser, un nuevo sentido, un lugar para su renacimiento. Humanizar la materia, impregnarla de algo ajeno a sí misma podría ser calificado de un antropomorfismo cruel e impositivo. Sin embargo, cuando esto se da en su esplendor, la materia deja de ser únicamente materia: se eleva, habla de la tierra lejana de la que procede, de su pasado y de las energías que la constituyeron y, al mismo tiempo, convoca la belleza. Esa materia ahora ordenada, ya instalada en su nuevo hogar, es capaz de ser algo más, y más profundamente, que simple arcilla, madera o piedra. Resulta hermoso pensar que su valor se mide en milenios de espera paciente en las entrañas del mundo, transustanciados en algo más alto que justifica, finalmente, su destino.

Every fragment of clay, wood, or stone; every mineral smelted into steel or aluminium; every heap of sand heated until it becomes that transparent paste called glass is matter torn from its milieu in order to be transformed into something that inevitably invokes the mark of Cain. All architectural matter bears the sign of the exile, of the dispossessed. And not only the matter of architecture: the same is true of the table we use each day, the clothes we wear, or the food we eat. There is a constant abduction of the world, of its fragments. All matter, therefore, is errant matter in search of a new home.
Architecture, when it succeeds, grants it a new being, a new meaning, a place for its rebirth. To humanise matter, to imbue it with something alien to itself, might be described as a cruel and imposing anthropomorphism. Yet when this occurs in its fullest expression, matter ceases to be merely matter: it rises, speaks of the distant earth from which it comes, of its past and of the energies that once constituted it, and at the same time summons beauty. That matter, now ordered and settled in its new dwelling, becomes capable of being something more, and more profoundly so, than simple clay, wood, or stone. It is moving to think that its value is measured in millennia of patient waiting within the bowels of the earth, transubstantiated into something higher that ultimately justifies its destiny.
